What is a skin check?

A skin check is a thorough examination of your skin, performed by a medical practitioner, to identify suspicious moles, lesions, or signs of skin cancer.

Do I need a referral for a skin check?

Yes, a GP referral is recommended for Medicare rebates for appointment with Dr Shirato. However, you can still book an appointment without a referral if preferred.

How long does a skin check take?

A standard skin check takes around 15–30 minutes, depending on whether it’s a full-body or targeted assessment.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing. You may be asked to remove clothing for a full-body check, in order to examine your skin thoroughly.

Will any treatment be done on the day?

If required, a biopsy may be performed during your appointment. Formal excision will be booked for a separate day.

How often should I have a skin check?

This depends on your personal risk factors, but most people benefit from year to two yearly checks. More frequent reviews are recommended if you have a history of skin cancer or multiple atypical moles.

What are the signs I should see a dermatologist sooner?

If you notice a changing mole, new growth, sore that won’t heal, or a spot that bleeds, you should book a skin check as soon as possible.

Are skin checks covered by Medicare?

Yes, skin checks with a valid referral are partially covered by Medicare. Our staff will provide fee and rebate details when you book.

Is the procedure covered by Medicare or private health insurance?

Some procedures attract a Medicare rebate. If you are privately insured, you may also be eligible to claim for procedures done at Windsor Gardens Day Surgery. Our team will provide full fee and rebate information.
