What is day surgery in dermatology?

Day surgery refer to minor surgical procedures performed in the day surgery setting under local anaesthetic, allowing patients to return home on the same day. We also offer in-house surgical procedures for those who do not have private insurance cover or those with non cancerous lesion which needs removal.

What types of procedures are performed?

Procedures may include:

✔ Cyst and lipoma removals and other benign lesion removals

Will I need a referral for day surgery?

Yes, a GP referral is required for day surgery treatment that fall under Medicare-rebatable medical procedures. This ensures appropriate assessment and continuity of care.

Do I need to fast or prepare beforehand?

No fasting is required for local anaesthetic procedures, and in most instances, we suggest you continue with your regular blood thinning medications. Clear instructions will be provided before your appointment.

Where is the day surgery performed?

Procedures are performed at Windsor Gardens Day Surgery, located on Level 1 of the 480 Specialist Centre for skin cancer removal.

Is there downtime after a procedure?

Most day surgeries involve small period of downtime. you will need to avoid strenuous activity or water exposure for 48 hours. If the treatment is done on your lower limbs, you may need to avoid walking or running for several weeks to optimise healing.

Will there be scarring?

Some scarring is expected in all skin cancer surgery, but we aim to minimise it through precise surgical technique and tailored aftercare advice. Scar treatments may be offered if necessary.

Will I need stitches removed?

In many cases, stitches are used and need to be removed after 7-14 days, depending on the procedure site. A follow-up appointment will be arranged during your visit.

Is the procedure covered by Medicare or private health insurance?

Some procedures attract a Medicare rebate. If you are privately insured, you may also be eligible to claim for procedures done at Windsor Gardens Day Surgery. Our team will provide full fee and rebate information.
